Barong is a lion-like creature, although other animals make up her features; and it is the guardian spirit of the earth and the forests.

The Barong lion is one of the five forms of Barong, and each Barong represents a specific area that is described as a different animal in every corner of the island of Bali. The animals are: the boar, the tiger, the snake or a dragon and lion. He is the guardian of the Portal or threshold of knowledge: “Balinese temples are doors, open portals without the upper crossbar, outdoors, because Bali is a hot weather island. The doors in sacred architecture are the thresholds of knowledge ”.

Barong is said to be the king of spirits and the leader of armies of good. Her enemy is the evil widow Rangda, the demon queen or witch who rules the army of Leyaks (demons who have floating heads from which their entrails hang. She is also portrayed as a ruthless and bloodthirsty sorceress who devours children.

Both characters present in the myth the eternal battle between good and evil, since both face each other in a supernatural combat and that in turn both represent the opposition of elements: the masculine and the feminine, light and darkness, and good and evil.
