He and his two brothers George Hays Beatty and William Henry Gore Beatty were all three Confederate Soldiers, born at Gravelly Hill in Lake Creek Township, North Carolina (birthplace also stated as Bladen, NC). They were the sons of John Day Beatty (1798-1849) and Jane Smith Hunter Holmes (1802-1875) who had a total of 11 children. Lucian died on March 3, 1899 in Bladen, NC. He was married to Anna Willis Howze on February 12, 1880. She was the daughter of Benjamin T. Howze and Margaret Holmes whose father was Hardy Lucian Holmes, son of Governor Gabriel Holmes. Lucian and Anna had three children including Marianna Beatty (born April 18, 1882 and "disappeared about 1909" according to family report), Henry Beatty (1887-1969) and Margaret Hunter Beatty (1891-1950). Margaret was born February 15, 1891 in Bladen, North Carolina and died January 12, 1950 in Charleston, West Virginia. She was married to Norman James Herring (1888-1973) on September 3, 1913 in Raleigh, West Virginia. Their children included Rachel Beatty Herring, James Hunter Herring, Elizabeth Herring, Captain Henry Howze Herring, and Margaret Holmes Herring. Henry Beatty was born November 11, 1887 in Bladen NC and died December 3, 1969 in Durham, NC. He was married to Mary Lou McCullen (1888-1919) on June 21, 1917 in Burgaw, NC and a second wife Gertrude Orr (1891-1974) on August 3, 1922 in Currie Pender, NC. A handwritten family sheet seems to indicate Henry, who was a cadet with the North Carolina Military Institute, may have had two daughters named Gladys Beatty Miller and Dorothy Beatty.
