The Virgin – 2 sizes – by Joseph Stella – 8.5 x 11" or 11 x 14"

The Virginby Joseph StellaWe fell in love with this gorgeous painting of the Virgin Mary the first time we saw it. The colors are rich, the arrangement is delightful, and the tone is warm and devotional. Mary is the “enclosed garden” of the Song of Songs. She is fruitful, providing all eligible graces to the faithful. We have looked at this painting many times but are still discovering more within its beauty. Joseph Stella was an American painter, born in Italy in 1877. He immigrated to the United States at a young age and, supported by his brothers, took up painting. He had a long, successful career in art and passed away in 1946. We wanted to offer this painting to you the minute we saw it but had to wait some years until it went out of copyright. He has two other paintings of Mary that we are very fond of, but this is our favorite. This painting is housed at the Brooklyn Museum. 1926.
