Ben Hogan EDGE CFT 19* 2H, 21* 3H, 27* 5H Speed Slot Hybrids

There are no shortcuts in the quest for perfection, this was the motto that Ben Hogan himself came up with when he started his own golf club company, Ben Hogan Golf. When it first started production in 1954, the idea was to make clubs that were geared towards the better player with clubs that had a lot of feel and great workability. Not only did Ben Hogan Golf succeed in that area, but they went even further and started making game improvement golf clubs as well. The company broke into the golf industry with the Apex line. The original Apex irons were one of the best iron sets in terms of soft feel and the ability to shape shots. The clean muscleback design with soft forged club heads is what makes these irons so sought after by players even today. While Ben Hogan Golf also came out with some excellent woods and hybrids. Perhaps the most innovative accomplishment that the Ben Hogan Golf company made, however, was partnering with Bettinardi Golf to create a line of Ben Hogan Bettinardi putters. These putters were of high quality and featured some of the best precision milling of any putters around. With both mallet and traditional blade designs, these putters inspired confidence with their soft feel and clean looks. Ben Hogan Golf always strived to achieve the most refined clubs on the market, which is why so many players look to add them to their golf bag.

It’s clear this club has been designed with control in mind. The shaft is one of the shortest in our test and that means you really can create the type of golf shots you want more easily.

This is a comfortable club to use. It’s like a pair of well-worn slippers you’ve found at the back of the cupboard. You put them on and you feel like they’ve never been away. This Hogan hybrid takes no time to get used to.

The weighty head slides a ball away with little need for extra swing power and the yardages are as consistent as you would expect from any tour-standard Hogan equipment.

The cosmetics are simple but that’s a good thing. Any club worthy of the Hogan name need to look good. That’s no easy task with a hybrid wood, but it has been achieved with the CFT. That dark blue paint contrasts superbly with the brushed steel face and top edge. This club should attract many admirers.

Verdict: “A robust, easy-to-control utility wood that is the perfect alternative to a 3 or 4 iron. Simple but striking cosmetics, too.”

Review: "A game changing club for me! This club re-introduced me to the 200 yard shot. I am naturally a low ball hitter with long irons, as I have a flat swing, but this club gets it up in the air for me nicely. I play this between my 5 iron (26 degree) and my 5 wood 18 degree. I am currently using the 4H now, which is 24 degrees loft. I hit it 190-205 depending on conditions and how hard I swing. I may go to the 3H to get more distance, but with only 14 clubs I hate to give up my 5 wood. I have not tried any other hybrids, but I have always played Hogan irons as they are the best feeling clubs for me. With this CFT 4H, you can work the ball as there is no offset (offset starts with 5H). It feels like an iron in your hands, and coming off the clubface, except for the trajectory. I can hit this club as high as a 6 iron, but as far as a 4 iron. If you are not playing this club or something like it, you are at a disadvantage! I follow the PGA tour quite a bit, as I volunteer at the Bell South Classic every year. I assure you that most pros are using a hybrid because they are much easier to hit, no doubt about it! You cannot go wrong with this club, and you can get it cheaper than some of the other main hybrids. This one is staying in my bag!!"
