James Bayne was always a commercial photographer, starting out in protrait photography. In the last quarter of the 19th century, he realized there was a future in furniture catalogs and the like and struck out on his own. By the start of WWI he had a factory on a full city block in Grand Rapids churning out automobile, furniture, clothing and souvenir booklets like this one.
