Philip Little was born in 1857 on Little's Point in Swampscott in the American state of Massachusetts. He worked as a young man in cotton and wool shop of his father and studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , until he had to finish his studies because of illness. After working for a short time for his father, he decided on a career in the design field and enrolled at the Lowell Institute a. After his local training and a one-year training in lithography at a company in Boston , he began in 1880 his further studies at the Art School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts , where he remained until 1882. He met here on the artist Frank Weston Benson from Salem in Massachusetts. Little moved to the completion of his training with his wife Lucretia Jackson also to Salem and shared a studio with Benson at the Chestnut Street 2. Little worked both as a landscape painter as well as a portrait painter. He exhibited his works since his time in the Museum School and also won numerous exhibition prizes. He was also a member of numerous artists' associations such as the National Art Club , the American Society of Etchers and the Portland Society of Artists in Maine.
