A highly recommended collection of 20th Century American detective stories, demonstrating how the genre evolved from the more sedate and dignified mystery stories of preceding years, and exploded into a more violent and "street-wise" story, featuring characters more commonplace and less noble. Ironically, MICKEY SPILLANE is not amongst those represented in this volume, considering that New American Library was also the publisher of his MIKE HAMMER books; but such are the wages of crime, I guess.
