Description:
Pandanus amaryllifolius - Pandan leaf - Asian cooking herb. This rare tropical is commonly used in Thai and other asian cooking to enhance flavor in foods including rice and cake dishes. It's nutty fragrance and flavor lends authenticity to same. With origins in Vietnam, this plant is not commonly found in the US. Fan shaped, narrow leaves make this an excellent fill in plant for your tropical plantings.
Cultivation:
Prefers humus-rich, evenly moist, well-drained soils. Protect from strong winds to prevent foliage damage and from harsh afternoon sun in hotter summer regions. Water deeply, regularly during first growing season to establish root system. Fertilize in early spring. In colder climates, shelter or move indoors before the threat of frost. Zone 6-10 or keep potted for relocation during cold temps. Full sun, fertilize with 16-10-10 during growing season, 2 times monthly.
