Hybrid snapdragons take longer to reach full height than heirloom types of snapdragons and we recommend you start them early in pots over winter.  You can direct sow them in spring but they will be much smaller.  Depending on where you live you can not direct sow snapdragons in late spring, or summer, as they will not germinate in temps 80 or above.

We start hybrid snapdragons here in zone 7 in pots indoors on January 1st.  Sow your seeds on the surface of your potting mix and very lightly dust with fine sand or vermiculite as they need light to germinate.  Keep moist and cool.  Once the seedlings are 2" tall we put them out in our garden.  Snapdragons are very cold tolerant and can take temps as low as 25 degrees.  The more time you can give them before warm spring/summer temps arrive the taller they will get.

You can also direct seed in very early spring.  These seeds are very tiny so if direct seeding it's best to use the shaker method where you mix your seeds with 1/4 cup of dry sand and use an old spice shaker (that's clean), or other container with holes in it, to evenly disperse your seeds.  Snapdragons need light to germinate so after sowing give them a very light dusting with peat so as to disguise them from birds.
