Vintage Traditional Ejiko Wood Kokeshi Doll Japanese Folk Art Doll Signed 4”H.
This is an older, handmade, traditional folk art, hand carved Ejiko Kokeshi Doll. There is added carved detailed design around the neck collar, with a lovely, aged warmth to the wood as well. As with many of the Kokeshi dolls, its head nods when moved. The Ejiko’s origin is derived from a folk toy that is called an Izume Ko Doll, (Izume Ko means “Isume baby” in the Yamagata dialect). This particular Ejiko follows the same basic short, rotund style seen in all of this form. This Kokeshi appears to be in very good to excellent vintage condition. No cracks, wood knots, dents, soiling. There is fading paint and several light scratches on the painted front. The tip of the Kokeshi’s top knot shows some damage. Please see photos /video for more detail on condition. A beautiful, one of a kind, handmade figurine!
Measurements: 4"H x2"W
Weight: 3 oz
These dolls were possibly originally intended as good luck talisman, designed to bring fertility or bountiful harvests. Later, they were sold to tourists at Tohoku spas.
For your consideration, there are other vintage figurines at my shop, Pangibles Vintage.🍒.
