A beautiful and rare Hutschenreuther Christmas plate from 1931. The scene depicts parishioners wending their way up a snow-covered path to a small church at the top of the hill. The entire scene is bracketed by the branches of two enormous conifers, leaving just a narrow opening for the night stars to shine through.
I know that this series ran from at least 1922 to 1936; if anyer can provide more information, I would greatly appreciate hearing from them. A quite rare plate: I could find no other Hutschenreuther Christmas plates from this series , and none listed or sold in the last 3 months.
The design is embossed on pure white porcelain and hand painted in traditional cobalt blue under the glaze. Diameter just under 9 inches (22.7 cm), somewhat larger than a Rosenthal Christmas plate, an impressive size. Fully marked on the back including the lion-in-oval trademark of Hutschenreuther, as well as the German city (Selb) and state (Bavaria) where the Hutschenreuther factory is located. Pierced foot for hanging wire.
EXCELLENT CONDITION (no chips, cracks, repairs or other defects), and FIRST QUALITY (no scratch through the trademark).
