Adam Oehlenschläger 1779-1979


The fifth plate in the Royal Copenhagen Bicentennial Series of six plates, which started with Royal Copenhagen’s Bicentennial 1775-1975 and continued with the US Bicentennial 1776-1976. Adam Oehlenschläger (1779-1850) was a Danish poet and playwright who introduced romanticism into Danish literature. He wrote the lyrics to the song Der er et yndigt land (There is a lovely country), which is the national anthem of Denmark.

The design is embossed on Danish porcelain and hand painted in traditional Copenhagen cobalt blue under the glaze. Diameter just over 7 inches, fully marked on the back including the three wavy line trademark of Royal Copenhagen. Pierced foot for hanging wire. Designed by Sven Vestergaard whose SV monogram appears on the back.
