Anubis has different roles in different contexts. Depicted as the protector of tombs as early as the First Dynasty (c 3100 - c 2890 BC), Anubis was also responsible for mummification. By the Middle Kingdom (circa 2055 - 1650 BC) he was replaced by Osiris in his role as lord of the underworld. One of his notable roles was as a guide to spirits in the afterlife. He would attend Libra events, during which the "heart was weighed" and determined whether the spirit would be allowed to enter the realm of the dead.[2] Despite being one of the oldest deities and "one of the most frequently mentioned" deities in the Egyptian Pantheon, Anubis played no role in Egyptian mythology.[3]

Anubis is depicted in black, a color that symbolizes renewal, life, the soil of the Nile, and the discoloration of a corpse after mummification. Anubis is related to his brother and Bawat, another Egyptian deity who is depicted with the head of a dog or in the shape of a canine, but with gray or white fur. Historians assume that the two characters were eventually combined.[4] Anubis' female counterpart is Anput. His daughter is the goddess of serpents Kebechet, and may have died
