Typically growing to only 10~15 feet tall, the pineapple guava isn’t a large plant, which makes it ideal for those who want to grow fruit but don’t have a lot of orchard space. Depending on how it’s pruned, it can be grown as a small tree or a large shrub. Pineapple guavas do best in areas with cooler winters within U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 to 11. The tree propagates readily by cuttings, and, once rooted, requires little maintenance.
Use a spoon to scoop out the pulp from the center of the fruit. The center has thick, juicy flesh that is light yellow or white in color. There are also about 30 edible seeds in the jelly-like center. A feijoa fruit has a taste reminiscent of pineapple, banana, strawberry, guava and quince.
