When to Plant Phlox Seeds

Sow seeds directly outdoors in the late fall or spring. Or, for earlier blooms, sow seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before transplanting.

Where to Plant Phlox Seeds

Phlox performs best in full sun or partial shade in fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Although it prefers sandy, fertile soil, it can be established in a variety of well-drained soils including alkaline substrates. Phlox are great in rock gardens, containers, and as ground cover.

How to Plant Phlox Seeds

If starting indoors, gently press seeds into the soil without covering. Seedlings will germinate within 7-21 days. If sowing directly into the garden, distribute seeds evenly into a prepared bed and rake into loosened topsoil. Keep seeds moist until germination. Space plants about 10" apart.

How to Care for Phlox

Allow Phlox to re-seed to have abundant blooms in the following year. Trim back the plant after the first flush of blooms. Trim to encourage a second bloom of flowers.
