Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve (EGR)
What It Does:
The EGR Valve’s purpose is to control exhaust emission levels emitted from the combustion chamber. This is achieved by re-circulating exhaust gases obtained after the combustion chamber into the intake manifold. This inert gas takes the place of oxygen that would normally enter the combustion chamber thus cooling the temperature of the combustion event. The EGR Valve is the “gate” that allows this flow. Location: The EGR Valve is located on the engine block or intake manifold Failure Symptoms: Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) illumination, failed emission test, rough engine idle, no idle condition, engine hesitation, surging

Repair tips:
Allow engine to cool before attempting replacement to avoid personal injury and fastener damage
If trouble code indicates insufficient flow, clean intake manifold passages
