CHIVES (Allium schoenoprasum)
Perennial
Pink/ Purple flowers and edible greens
8 to 12 inches tall
Full sun or part shade
Hardy zones 3 to 9
This herb that grows tubular foliage can be snipped periodically through the year for use as
a topping or in cooking. Great in salads or on baked potatoes. I like to sprinkle them on fresh
tomato sandwiches and on just about anything else. They have such a mild onion flavor, that
it makes them very versatile in use.
Also grows pinkish purple flowers that are very beautiful and look like little pom-poms.
They can also be dried for later use if you get too much at one time. The little union-like
bulb that form under the soil divide in half, and then those divide in half, and they multiply
this way. They will probably do this 3 or 4 times a year. So eventually you can divide and
grow some in one place just for flowers or share them with friends and neighbors.
Comes with planting instructions.
