It runs from Brecht and Benn, the great pioneers of this century, up through such important new poets as Hans Magnus Enzensberger and Gunter Grass. The collection is particularly valuable because it presents not only poets already known in this country -- such as Bachmann, Celan, Eich, Gong, Hagelstange, Hollerer, Holthusen, Krolow, Lehmann, Piontek, Schroder -- but many who are highly ranked in Germany but have not previously been translated for American publication. In all thirty-nine poets are include. The translations are the work of Gertrude C. Schwebell, herself a poet and long a student of German literature. Professor Victor Lange, Chairman of the Department of German Literature at Princeton, has contributed a long essay-introduction which surveys the poetry of the period and provides critical evaluations of its leading figures. There are notes on the poets and a selective bibliography.
