Joe Ely, Butch Hancock and Terry Allen.

The play, presented by the American Music Theater Festival and the Lincoln Center's "Serious Fun" festival, is based on the diaries a Texas prostitute kept in the 1930s. You don't have to know anything about the plot, however, to appreciate these terrific, rootsy country and country-folk songs.

Wayne Hancock's "Thunderstorms & Neon Signs," Butch Hancock's "Wind's Gonna Blow You Away" and Terry Allen's "Angels of the Wind" all are terrific. (Wayne Hancock, incidentally, is no kin to Butch.) Jo Carol Pierce's gleefully bitter waltz, "I Blame God," with Terry Allen on tuba, is worthy of Tom Waits - although the braying animals in the background get a little old after a few plays. It's particularly wonderful to hear Ely back in an acoustic country vein, especially with his former bandmate Lloyd Maines on steel guitar and dobro. And songs Ely wrote or co-wrote here, including "Fate With a Capital F" and "Whiskey and Women and Money to Burn," are among the best he has recorded in recent years.
