THIS WEEK: on the cover, textile designer Joseph Elliott has turned his hand to a sculptured and jeweled relief portrait of Mussorgsky's tormented hero, Boris Godunov. The Tsar's most famous interpreter, Feodor Chaliapin, is the subject of warm reminiscences by Genia Foresta, which are here published for the first time in English. Dr. Ann M. Lingg introduces us to a fantastic "character" who plays a major role in Boris Godunov before the curtain rises, while Dr. Margery Stomne Selden of Wayne State University brings to light a little-known talent of Catherine II, ruler of Russia two centuries after Boris. Operatic fare under the Soviets is described by David Stewart Hull, including the music of Rimsky-Korsakov, whose works based on history and folklore are discussed at length by Nicolui Rabeneck.
Issued weekly during the Opera Season and fortnightly in the Spring and Fall by
