THIS WEEK: the cover photograph by Louis Melancon shows Hoffmann (Nicolai Gedda) with his first love, Olympia (Mattiwilda Dobbs) , whom he sees through rose-colored glasses. The disillusion implicit in Offenbach's unique opera is examined by John W. Freeman in the first of two articles. Literary kin of E. T. A. Hoffmann, author of the Tales, are discussed by Jane W. Stedman of Roosevelt University and Frank J. Warnke of Yale; interviews feature a stage director noted for his handling of Hoffmann and the singing actor who will perform all four "clown" roles on Saturday's broadcast. Herbert Weinstock, chief editor at Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., writes on the sadly neglected operas of Hector Berlioz, while a revealing chapter concerning Berlioz himself is translated by Gisa Schulz.
