Batman/Spawn crossover coming from Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo
DC superstar and CCO Jim Lee announced a long-awaited reunion during his San Diego Comic-Con International panel yesterday as Spawn creator Todd McFarlane and his frequent Spawn artist Greg Capullo are teaming up to deliver a new Batman/Spawn crossover.
Batman and Spawn first crossed paths in 1994’s Spawn/Batman #1 written by Frank Miller and drawn by McFarlane. A year later there was another crossover, Batman/Spawn: War Devil from Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon and the late Alan Grant with Klaus Janson on art.
After Lee made the announcement at his panel, McFarlane tweeted the news himself with an image of himself, Lee and Capullo celebrating their latest project.
Batman/Spawn #1 will be a 48-page one-shot special set for release December 13th, 2022. This not only marks the first time in over two decades Batman and Spawn will again meet, but McFarlane and Capullo again working together. Capullo drew many issues of Spawn before becoming the lead artist on DC’s New 52 run of Batman with Scott Snyder, illustrating all but a rare few issues of their celebrated run. Capullo’s extensive experience with both Spawn and Batman makes him a perfect partner for McFarlane’s newest crossover.
Meanwhile, Lee also announced Batman: Spawn: War Devil will be reprinted in the lead up to Batman/Spawn #1. The new edition will be released November 15th.Spawn Reboot Star Jamie Foxx Reveals Details of His Epic Superhero Suit
Spawn star Jamie Foxx has offered some more insight into the long-awaited reboot.
A reboot of the Image Comics character, Spawn, has been on the cards for what seems like a hellish eternity – but star Jamie Foxx has now offered a promising update on the project, revealing details of the otherworldly superhero suit that he will don when he eventually takes the stage. Speaking with Comicbook.com, Foxx, who has been signed on to play the title character of Spawn since 2013, described the epic nature of the costume, as well as describing the comic book movie project as "special.”
"I've seen a lot of concepts. Because Todd, what he does it, every single day he's doodling and he's fixing and he's doing some things that, to me, I think is gonna be like way out when you see it. And how he crafts that cape and how that cape becomes almost like – I'll say this – as big as the screen that you're watching."
Created by Todd McFarlane in the early 90s, Spawn begins life as an assassin named Albert Francis Simmons before being murdered and making a deal to become a Hellspawn. While he begins by doing Hell’s bidding, Spawn soon finds a new purpose in stopping evil, battling street gangs and organized crime as a demonic antihero.
Alongside revealing details of the costume and its grand cape, Foxx has also recently compared the idea behind Spawn to that of 2019’s Oscar winning DC outing, Joker. "It's sort of like how when they did the Joker. The Joker, yes, is here, but the story about this man who was in fire, it's the same with what we're doing with this,” Foxx explained. “And so, we're just like, just getting this right, cooking it right, but staying in contact, keeping the energy going and when we lay it on you, there's gonna be some moments where you go "oh man." You've been watching everybody shoot their shot and now we're getting ready to shoot ours."
Despite the Spawn reboot taking what feels like forever to come to fruition, creator and potential director Todd McFarlane is determined to bring the avenging hellspawn to the big screen. And hopes to do so as soon as possible.
"Something's going to give in the next few months, right? There's too many people pushing in that direction, again I've got a call later today on that very subject,” McFarlane said of the project back in April. “You can imagine Spider-Man makes a billion dollars and everybody sort of gets sort of… I mean they were already crazy, now they just got twice as crazy. I mean they got crazy when the only movies that were making money were superheroes, and then Venom goes and rocks it, and then Spider-Man comes in and obliterates it, so now they're almost singular in their mindset of what kind of ideas they've got. So something has to happen. We'll never get to the top of the mountain if we can't do it now, with everybody wanting to do it now. Fingers crossed. I would say it's now or never."
With such big names as Foxx, McFarlane Jeremy Renner, and producer Jason Blum attached and set on bringing the character to modern audiences, and with Foxx’s latest updates, could Spawn finally get off the ground after all this time? Let’s hope so.
Jamie Foxx can next be seen as a vampire hunter in Day Shift, which is due to land on Netflix on August 12, 2022.
