Issued weekly during the Opera Season and fortnightly in the Spring and Fall by
THE METROPOLITAN OPERA GUILD 654 MADISON AVENUE, NEW YORK, N. Y.
THIS WEEK: the cover etching by Ishrahel van Mecken-them, reproduced by courtesy of the New York Public Library Print Collection, shows the grisly climax of the Salome legend as seen through the dispassionate eyes of the Renaissance. Leonard Karasyk looks at the Wilde-Strauss Salome through the eyes of the twentieth century; glimpses of the composer before and after his masterpiece are afforded by Robert Breuer and Martin Radt, an electrical engineer who knew Wolzogen (the Feuersnot librettist) and is currently living in Berne. A fascinating French precursor of Strauss' Salome is uncovered by Ann M. Lingg.
Gianni Schicchi, last encountered by the broadcast audience on January 19, 1952, is reintroduced by two of OPERA NEWS' most faithful contributors, John W. Freeman and Jane W. Stedman. Elsewhere are pictures of Blanche Thebom on her recent tour of Russia.
