Bastet is a Goddess of the ancient Egyptian religion, worshipped as early as the Second Dynasty (2890 BCE). Her name also is rendered as B'sst, Baast, Ubaste, and Baset. In ancient Greek religion, she was known as Ailuros.

Originally hailed from Bubastis in Lower Egypt, Bastet began her divine journey as a fierce lioness warrior, sharing this aspect with other deities such as Sekhmet. Over time, however, she has evolved to embody a gentler, more nurturing persona, often depicted in the form of a domestic cat. This transformation symbolizes her dual roles. As Sekhmet’s counterpart, she is a formidable protector and warrior, while as Bastet, she epitomizes fertility, motherhood, and the benign aspects of nature.

Bastet’s identity is deeply intertwined with the sun, considering her as the daughter of Ra and Isis, and she is celebrated as a defender of the king and, by extension, the sun god Ra himself. Her powers extend beyond the battlefield. She is a guardian against diseases and evil spirits, a promoter of fertility and childbirth, and plays a crucial role in the mythologies surrounding the Eye of Ra.

Her worship is not confined to grand temples but is rooted in the natural world, often taking place in caves or grottoes, reflecting her connection to the wild and untamed aspects of life. Despite this, a few temples have been dedicated to her. Those on the Neda River and in Apollonopolis Magna, stood as exceptions, attracting devotees and offering a glimpse into her widespread veneration.

As a deity, Bastet is celebrated for her musical affinities, especially noted for holding a sistrum, a musical instrument that linked her to dance, joy, and the festive aspects of life. Her festivals are vibrant affairs, filled with music, dance, and revelry, drawing vast crowds and demonstrating the deep love and reverence the ancient Egyptians had for her.

Cats, revered in ancient Egypt for their protective instincts against vermin and snakes, became synonymous with Bastet, reflecting her protective and nurturing qualities. This led to the practice of mummifying cats as a form of homage to her, with vast cat cemeteries discovered in places sacred to Bastet, illustrating the profound bond between the deity and these creatures.

Through the millennia, Bastet's legacy as a Goddess of protection, fertility, and joy has endured, captivating the imagination of generations and securing her place as one of ancient Egypt's most beloved and revered deities.
