No serious study of the American Civil War is complete without consulting the Official Records (OR). The 30 volumes of the “OR” provide the most comprehensive, authoritative reference on Naval Civil War operations than any other record documenting this war. The reports contained in the Official Records are those of the principal leaders who fought the battles and then wrote their assessments. The Official Records are thus the eyewitness accounts by the veterans themselves.

Series I Contains 27 volumes of all naval operations including all inland waterways.

Series II  Contains 3 volumes that provide statistics and condition of both forces at the outset of conflict, returns of captured materials, and records of naval prisoners of war. Also included as Part I in Volume 1, is a complete ships listing for both navies with basic statistics on type, dimensions, armaments and propulsion.

As primary source material, the Official Records are, without question, the most complete and impartial documentation on the American Civil War. They provide a foundation for serious research into virtually every aspect of the war.
