THIS WEEK : our cover picture is derived from an engraving by De Launay the Younger after the drawing of J. M. Moreau the Younger, suggesting the youthfulness and charm of Manon. A new contributor, Charles Allan Baretski, writes of the operatic interest displayed in libraries from the standpoint of the Senior Librarian of the Music and Art Division of the Newark (New Jersey) Public Library. Otto Kunze, who tells OPERA NEWS readers something of the history of opera marionettes, is himself a renowned puppeteer, an adapter of plays for puppet production and a skillful creator of puppets. Mr. Kunze's definitive puppet bibliography, found on page 30, should prove useful. We are glad to publish Boris Goldovsky's views on Manon, a transcript of his radio feature of December 20, 1947, under the sponsorship of The Texas Co. The late Harold V. Milligan (OPERA NEWS, October 15, 1951) acted for many years as editor of the Opera Quiz, sharing with Geraldine Souvaine the authorship of the Quiz Book (OPERA NEWS, November 8, 1948). His friendly article of advice to future quiz writers is published as a salute to his memory. Issued weekly during the Opera Season and fortnightly in the Spring and Fall by THE METROPOLITAN OPERA GUILD 654 MADISON AVENUE, NEW YORK, N. Y.
