It is native to northern Mexico and the southern and central United States from Arizona east to Florida and the Carolinas and north as far as Nebraska & has naturalized in many states throughout the US.
The plant generally lives in the sandy soils and deserts of the south of the North American continent but it isn't too picky about soil type (except for clay soil).
It's hardy and vibrant in color. It is favored by butterflies and honeybees alike!
It produces a dark reddish amber buttery tasting honeyand once established will self seed.
Medicinal Value: Tea made from the root can be used for gastroenteritis. Powdered root can be applied to skin disorders.
