Larvikite is a variety of augite syenite or monzonite consisting of rhomb-shaped ternary feldspars, barkevikite, titanian augite and lepidomelane. These feldspars are known as ternary because they contain significant components of all three endmember feldspars. Due to its geochemical characteristics and its chemical composition (it contains Ca,NA and K) the so-called 'ternary' feldspar it is believed to have formed at around 30km, close the the boundary between the crust and the mantle.
Larvikite is comprised nearly entirely of feldspar, and it is the special effect of the feldspar crystals that give it its blue color. This effect is called the "Schiller effect". Larvikite has many other names like Pearlspar, Blue Pearl, Black Moonstone with Black Labradorite e.t.
