This is an original 9" X 7.5" RANCHERIA Brand Bartelett Pears produce crate label sign. This particular label design was first printed in the 1920's and the same plates were used until 1955. Very colorful Indian Warrior with Maiden, horse, tee-pees, with with advertising on label including "Produce U.S.A. - Suisun Valley Fruit Growers Association, Suisun, Calif. - Blue Anchor - Net Weight 46 LBS." The label and backer are covered in glass and custom framed with a thin/narrow copper border. It has a reverse glass sign look to it and a great vintage feel.
Colorful paper label signs have been used to identify products since the early 1880s. Introduced to America by European artists, this printing process became known as lithography, the first commercial art. Orchard owners used this new concept of lithography to bring attention to their fruit. In the 1950's, the development of pre-printed cardboard boxes caused wooden crates with paper labels to be a thing of the past.
