This thorn carving shows a Yoruba Man drumming in the traditional way. Thorn carvings are unique to Nigeria. As in this example, they generally depict scenes and activities common to village life. Thorn carvings were first created in the early 1930s by Justus Akeredolu, an Owo-born chief. Between 1933 and 1938, he taught students the art of thorn carving at the Owo Government School. In 1949, Akeredolu began detailed painting of the carvings, but this elaboration has not survived. The art of thorn carving has since been imitated by many. Initially, thorn carvings were made for use as stamps, but they have evolved into carvings depicting village life, which are very popular tourist souvenirs. Due to the fragility of the carvings, they are not sold in the same hectic manner as other souvenirs; instead, they can be bought from the carvers themselves, from bookshops, at thorn carving exhibitions in Nigeria, and also in New York and London.
Thorns from various trees are used for this type of carving, including the ata and egun egun trees, the thorns of which are approximately two to four inches long. Two thorns of different colours are commonly used in one carving, as in this example made from dark brown and cream thorns. Thorns are relatively soft and therefore easy to carve. This figure was carved with a sharp knife, and the surface was then sanded. The arms, legs and other protruding elements were added using glue made from rice cooked with water and applied with a stick, a process is known as 'Ola Fesese'.
