When cover photographer Guy Aroch and amateur shooter Elijah Wood met, there was much shoptalk. "We discussed cameras, technology, and likes and dislikes of picture-taking," says Aroch. "For Elijah, photography's not highly technical; it's all about feeling. That makes the best kind of photographer.".

In Siena, Italy, one is born not only into a family but also into ()nc of its 17 ntrghborhoods corttncidc---where loyalty is tierce. Twice each summer, they cone together for 11 Palio di Siena, a festival whose main event is a wild horse race contested for con trada pride. On mounts blessed by parish priests, riders charge violently around Piazza del Campo three times in about a minute. Then the winner is hoisted aloft, as Luigi Bruschelli of the Torre contrada is hereon August 16. And, yes, a few euros change hands postrace.
