Garlic Chives (Allium tuberosum) Chinese Chives vegetable seeds

Garlic Chives is a close cousin to common chives, has a mild garlic flavor and is sometimes called Chinese chives since they are used primarily in Asian cooking. It also can be used to garnish salads.

Sow and plant

start seeds indoors and set out at about the time of your last frost. Sow the seeds into a pot. The soil temperature should be kept to room temperature for the first six weeks. Then, once the seeds start germinating, take them and plant them outdoors. Garlic chives grow between fifteen to eighteen inches high and make a lovely flower in a border or container plant, and they also work well in the herb garden. They can be planted along a path or as a dense ground cover. Full sun to partial afternoon shade to grow in any average, well drained soil.

Harvesting

Do not harvest in the first year. In spring, gather handfuls of greens for use in the kitchen. The leaves become somewhat tough in summer.
