The book shows the agony and hardships of the people of Acadia when they were kicked from their homes and relocated (without choice) to other parts of the world.  The tragic poem follows the plight  of a betrothed couple.  the handstome strong village blacksmith and the beautiful young Evangeline.

The original copyright is listed as 1866 and belonging to Longfellow.  Houghton Mifflin has listed Copyright dates of 1882 qne 1886.
The book was probably printed within this period by H.O. Houghton & Co.  Phototype illustrations were printed separately by the Lewis Company. 

Darley was one of the most renowned  illustrators and artists of the period.  He was called upon to illustrate the works of  other great authors of the period including James Fennimore Cooper, Charles Dickens, Washington Irving, Frances  Parkman, and  Harriet Beecher Stowe.  He also collaborated with Edgar Allen Poe for illustrating The Gold Bug.
