POSTSCRIPT Occasionally, a photograph is made that's so powerful it renders
a moment immortal, On October 5,1966, a company including Marine Gunnery Sergeant Jeremiah Purdie was caught in an ambush on Mutter's Ridge in Vietnam. In the top picture, one of the most famous of that war Purdie arrives at a first-aid station and, despite his own head wounds, reaches out to a comrade. Purdie survived and, after a 20-year career that saw him win three Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star, eventually retired to Fayetteville, North Carolina; LIFE's Larry Burrows, who took the picture, was killed later in the war. In the bottom photo, Purdie remembers his commanding officer during a visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1999--a picture taken by Burrows's son, Russell. Jeremiah Purdie, who died earlier this month at age 74, will be among those we salute this Memorial Day.
