He was born on April 1, 1921, in Burlington, Texas. Murff was a talented pitcher and outfielder who played in the minor leagues before becoming a scout. He is credited with discovering some of the most beloved players in Mets history, including Jerry Koosman, Ken Boswell, and Jerry Grote. Murff also signed Nolan Ryan, who went on to become one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history. After leaving the Mets, Murff worked as a scout for the Montreal Expos and the Atlanta Braves.
