On October 31, 1949, the city of Jeremie was blessed with a son who was to become one of the greatest impressionists in the whole of Haiti. Ludovic J. Simpson started painting in 1973 under the pupilage of Ernst Louizer, who was well versed with the dos and don’ts of the painting world. As it was in those days, learning was through apprenticeship as there were few schools where people would attend school to learn art. Under the guidance of Louizer he underwent serious transformation, the end product being a mature artist.

Ludovic J. Simpson uses a conglomeration of colors, which he combines artistically to create the desired intention. Most of his paintings are as bright as the painter, as he is always jovial and radiating inner warmth. He does landscapes and market places with amazing refinement. In one of his paintings called the Villagers, he has painted different people going about their day to day businesses. Women are getting ready to go to the market while the men are busy tilling the hard ground. Ludovic J. Simpson often appends his name to his work to give that unique and rare sign of an accomplished artist. He mainly worked with oil on canvas.

Two published books carry the illustration of Ludovic’s work. These include Haiti Voodoo Kingdom to Modern Riviera and Haitian Painting Art and Kitsch. They have been authored by John Allen Fransiscus and Eva Pataki respectively. Other artists who paint a similar style include Jean Rene Jerome, Joseph Jacob, Emmanuel Jolicoeur and Wesner Pierre Louis. His impressionistic work has been exhibited in Haiti and
