The giraffe's extraordinarily long neck and legs, horn-like ossicones, and spotted coat patterns
are its most distinctive features. It belongs to the family Giraffidae, along with the okapi, the closest
living relative. Its sporadic range is from Somalia in the east to South Africa in the south and from
Niger in the west. Typically, savannahs and wooded areas are home to giraffes. They eat the leaves,
fruits, and flowers of woody plants, mostly acacia species, which they browse at heights
that are inaccessible to most other herbivores.
