The lion is a large, muscular cat with a broad chest, a short, rounded head, a short neck, and round ears. The color of its fur ranges from light buff to silvery grey, yellowish red, and dark brown. The underparts are generally lighter in color. A newborn lion has dark spots that fade as the cub grows older, though faint spots on the legs and underparts may still be visible. The only member of the cat family that exhibits obvious sexual dimorphism is the lion. Males have larger heads and a prominent mane that grows downwards and backwards and covers the majority of the head, neck, shoulders, and chest. The mane is usually brownish with yellow, rust, and black hairs.
