About Book:
Between 1974 and 1980, a group of scientists and educators at the University of Jerusalem in Israel developed and wrote a textbook, in Hebrew, called Thinking Under Uncertainty. That text is now used in a course taught to Israeli fourteen-year-olds, to improve their probabilistic thinking skills, introduce concepts like uncertainty, point out circumstances under which our thinking processes lead us astray, and suggest some tools to improve our skills when dealing with uncertainty.
The present book presents a translation of the Hebrew text, rewritten to include material more suited to American adults than to Israeli school children. However, the elementary approach used in the original is retained here. Although the topic of uncertainty is an advanced topic within mathematics, this book should be accessible to any adult with a minimal knowledge of arithmetic, that is, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and the calculation of percentages.
