FIBER DIET
Recently, there has been a great deal of interest in the importance of fiber in our diets.

Dietary fiber is that portion of plants that is largely resistant to breakdown by enzymes in the human digestive system.

Over the years, fiber intake has declined in the American diet.

Many health professionals agree that dietary fiber is an important part of our diet.

Although many physicians are advising their patients to increase their fiber intake by eating more whole-grain breads and cereals, fruits, and vegetables, the total function of fiber in the digestive system remains unknown.

It is known that fiber in the diet, such as wheat and corn fiber, can have a laxative effect.

High-fiber foods, such as bran cereals, nuts, fruits, and vegetables, generally require more chewing, take longer to eat, tend to be bulky, and may help to create a feeling of fullness.

Although fad diets guaranteeing quick weight loss are frequently acclaimed in the popular press, people tend to ignore the basic concept behind weight loss-caloric expenditures must exceed caloric intake.

In order to lose weight, you must increase your physical activity and/or decrease your caloric intake.

The Fiber Diet combines the benefits of a higher intake of dietary fiber with a guide for a reduced intake of calories from a wide variety of foods.

More importantly, the Fiber Diet has been successfully tested in two medical centers associated with the UCLA Medical School.

Dr. Susan Stanik, of the Olive View Medical Center, and Drs. James Sowers and Michael Tuck, of the Sepulveda Veterans Administration Medical Center, monitored the weight loss and health of people on the diet.

The effectiveness of the Fiber Diet was demonstrated in overweight men and women; it is also appropriate for per- sons interested in increasing their fiber intake while maintaining their weight.
