He was a one-man musical hit spectacular, equally at home with "stride" piano or a Bach organ chorale, 285 lbs. of showmanship and genius, he could charm the badge off a cop or the keys of a Steinway. 

From a teenager, playing the Harlem movie-houses, to radio's first superstar, to his tragic death at 39...FATS "misbehaved" his way to world fame as one of the greatest composers and musicians this country has ever seen. 

Today his life and music are immortalized in a Broadway musical hit.
