The Perfect Hostess Personal Development Paperback Book by Nancy Prentiss 1946

A Word from NANCY PRENTISS DURING the years the Westmorland Sterling Advisory Service has been functioning, it has been my pleasure to help thousands of women with their party plans, guide countless others in the selection of their table appointments and advise many more on the fine points of table service and etiquette.

Each letter which comes to my desk is answered personally and recommendations are given in accordance with the particular needs of each customer.

More and more frequently, however, letters asking for general information on table service and entertainment have appeared among the requests for specific party plans or answers to particular problems of the hostess.

The Westmorland Sterling Advisory Service is a personalized service and no printed material has been available to comply with these requests.

Since the women of the country want a comprehensive book on table settings and etiquette, my aim in writing "The Perfect Hostess" has been to give them just that.

While women like to know how "the four hundred" do things, they are really more interested in learning a set of standards to apply in their own homes.

Etiquette is not an inflexible code but rather a summation of the social customs and conventions of a particular group of people in a particular country at a given time.

The spirit of hospitality in a home should be exemplified by the warmth and manner of service which constitute the true meaning of grace and charm.

Every hostess desires to capture this spirit.

The rules I have given in this book are the ones the majority of Americans use in their homes every day.

Information to guide you in selecting the silver, china, linens and glassware for your table is also included in the book.

From it you may easily learn how to combine them so as to achieve the artistic in table settings.

I have given you ideas for decorations, for menus and for entertainment and suggestions for planning your party.

I hope you like it.
