Cow Country History Paperback Book Will James University Of Nebraska Press 1973

We speak of cow country out here, we mean range country-a country where cattle run loose in open territory and are identified by brands and ear- marks, not by names and spots.

There may be many horses on the same range, as many as there is cattle, and even some sheep, but it's always called cow country by the cowboys.

The words Cow Country mean open range, cow camps, round-up wagons, remudas, riders and branding irons.

They mean all that goes to make it a cow country, and when a cowboy says "it's a good cow country," another cowboy gets visions of good range, good camps, good chuck and wages, and good saddle-horses.

According to many plush-seat riders who write, there is no more cow country; but regardless of them, and if a feller wants to, he can start on horseback, not in a car, from away into Mexico and be on open range land from there, acrost the whole of the U. S.-up north into Canada.

Of course, there'd be some zigzagging to be done and irrigated settlements to cross, but as I said in one of my stories in this book, there's many places where irrigated or farmed lands are just specks as compared to all the land that's around that's still all cow country.

Some of it is still free range and some is owned, but it's hard to tell it apart, because the most of it is open and there's not so many fences to mar the land.

Book is in good condition. General shelf and corner wear. A few white marks on the front and back cover. Some fraying along the cover the edges. Cover creasing and fading. A solid reading copy. Please see photos for details, and let me know if you have any questions.
