One For Sleep Crime Thriller Paperback Book by Frank Bonham Gold Medal 1960
PAROLE OFFICER
A tough, fast-on-his-feet, throw-away-the- key boy... but Sam Garrett had thrown away so many keys, seen so many guys dehabilitated forever in rehabilitation centers that he had ended by feeling guiltier than any mug he'd ever pinched in his years as a cop.
His parolees were lost in a jungle from which there was no way out.
And it was the jungle that caused them to leave town, get drunk, jump off bridges.
And all of these 'solaces were expressly forbidden the man who had done time, so a parole officer could only hope to be around when a parolee started looking for a bus, a bottle, or a bridge.
Sam Garrett didn't mind being around at times like those, but when the cops got wind of what Sam's wife was up to, it was Sam who longed for the bus, the bottle, the bridge.
