Burkhardt History Paperback Book by Hugh R. Trevor Roper Washington Square Press
JACOB CHRISTOF BURCKHARDT was one of the nineteenth century's great philosophical historians.
A pioneer in cultural history, his masterpiece, THE CIVILIZATION OF THE RENAISSANCE IN ITALY, is a classic study of the emergence of modern society and of the emancipation of the individual.
In REFLECTIONS ON HISTORY Burck- hardt views the "magnificient contin- uum" of history within the three dimensions of the State, Religion, and Culture. Although he emphasized the influence of the great men who set the tone of their periods, Burckhardt never- theless understood history as a "whole" -a unity to be contemplated but never fully explained.
"History is poetry on the grandest scale," he wrote in 1842. Yet he feared for the future vitality of the European tradition.
Regretting the passing of Germany's idealistic humanism, he foresaw the eclipse of spiritual and aesthetic values by the crass material- ism of the rising industrial societies.
The historical setting for this book is true.
