The second edition of Fundamentals of Music contains many suggestions from teachers some of whom have used the book since its publication a decade ago. 

Although there are many improvements in the text and musical examples, the most apparent changes are as follows:

1. Chord progressions for a foundation in keyboard experience and harmonic ear training. 

This material is treated in four ways: 

(a) conventional progressions of the principal and secondary chords in the major and minor modes;

(b) application of the chord material in the harmonization of a melody with the chord tones in both bass and treble;

and open

(c) the melody in the treble with chord tones in the bass;

(d) the harmonization of an additional melody in which close chord structures are stressed. 

The latter is for observation and study. Passing and neighboring tones are identified in all of the melodies harmonized.

2. Chordal accompaniment which is closely related to the above is another important addition. 

Many chording rhythmic patterns are introduced and the student is shown how to apply these to the melo- dies found in each chapter.

This book is designed to integrate theory, music-reading, and melodic ear-training. 

Its aim is to lay the foundations of musicianship through emphasis upon hearing and seeing rhythm and melody with a suggestion of their harmonic background. 

For the simplest and most effective presentation, a fundamental pattern is followed in each chapter.
