Dahomey was a West African kingdom (situated in today's Southern Benin) from the beginning of the 17th century up until 1904. Forbes, a British naval officer, made two journeys to visit the Court of the King with the unsuccessful mission to convince him to end involvement in the slave trade. The books include descriptions of the inhabitants, their customs, culture, and vocabularies of the Vahie and Dahoman languages.

2 volumes. 8" x 5". 244 + 248 pages. Modern two-tone brown and black  boards with gilt spine titles. Black endpapers. Contains all the illustrations including the 10 original full-page chromolithographs.
