TOP OF THE WEEK:
COVER: THE AGNEW CASE: After months as the "Mr. Clean" of the Watergate. stricken Nixon Administration, Vice
President Spiro Agnew suddenly came under a cloud last week with the news that he was being investigated in a
criminal case. It was yet another blow to his boss, Richard Nixon, and a severe setback to Agnew's own Presidential
hopes. The Washington bureau reported and Senior Editor Russell Watson wrote the story. (Newsweek cover photo by
George Tames -- Globe.).
HIDEAWAYS OF POWER: Their hideaways range from the ostentatious to the austere, but virtually every world leader
has a place where he escapes from the pressures of office. From bureau files and research by Senior Editorial Assistant
Susan Agrest, Associate Editor Milton R. Benjamin tells of some of these redoubts.
BLACK POWER: The most talked.about runner on the world track circuit is the son of a poor African farmer who never
competed in sports until he was 20. From files from Malcolm MacPherson, Peter Bonventre profiles Kenya's Ben Jipcho
and the coming of age of African track.
BOMBS AWAY: After four years of air raids on Cambodia, the bombs are to stop falling this week -- never having
achieved their goal. General Editor Richard M. Smith reports.
HOT TUBS: Santa Barbara, CaliL, is the center of a new fad called "hot tubbing" -- outdoor communal bathing at
temperatures up to 120 degrees. Aficionados tout its benefits for mind and body; to put their claims to the test,
reporter Martin Kasindorf (above, center) joined some back- yard in-the-buffs for a neighborly soak.
THOR LIVES: Descendants of the ancient Norsemen met on a windy ridge in Iceland last week to invoke the aid of Thor
and the other "greatest gods" of old. Their quest: to revive worship of the deities from their legendary past. James E.
Doherty reports.
