About the artist: "Sterling B. Smeltzer was born in Blair County, Pennsylvania on November
5, 1908. Upon graduating from Altoona High School in 1927, Smeltzer
majored in engineering and art at Carnegie Tech. He further
studied at University of California at Los Angeles and Ohio State
University. During the Depression he painted murals in post offices for
the Works Progress Administration. From 1942 to 1951 he worked for
Curtiss-Wright Airplane Company where he headed the industrial art
section and then continued with North American Aviation until
