This is an outstanding piece of indigenous folk art imported from Tonala, Mexico. It’s an extraordinary Tastoane Owl-themed mask worn during the revered ceremonial fight that takes place every July 25th. The mask is made from leather and has three-dimensional adornments. The painting and detail are phenomenal and the mask is substantial with a mass of hair made from horse tails. Tastoanes represent the original tribal peoples who hid in local caves( thus the spiders/snakes/reptiles) as the Spaniards approached. The yearly ritual battle re-enacts the introduction of Spaniards and Christianity into this area of Mexico. This mask measures approximately 12” in height by 10” in width and depth with the hair hanging almost 4 feet! The mask is signed by the artist and dancer. Economy shipping in the U.S. will be $48.00.
